Recruitment and Retention of Qualified Employees is an important element in service delivery to clients and families. A collaboration between Fitzmaurice Community Services, several area non-profits and Northampton Community College had resulted in the development of a long term Career Path offering Direct Support Professional certification.
Qualified workers are now offered, the opportunity to step onto a Career path which formally identifies, recognizes and certifies the skill sets they bring to their job. This Career path promotes professionalism, opens the doors for advancement and financial reward.
Each agency trains their staff in: Basic Human Services, CPR, First Aid, Aging, Licensing, Policy & Procedures, Medication Administration, Universal Precautions, Fire Safety, Incident Reporting, Abuse/Neglect, Household Management, Finances, Relationship Building, Crisis Prevention, and Program Planning.
After receiving the orientation training, the employee take the Direct Support Professional 1 Competency Assessment & Practicum, and achieving a score of 80% or higher allows them to begin training modules for the DSP (Direct Support Professional) 2 Certificate Classes at Northampton Community College.
The 5 modules in the DSP2 Certificate Program are: Critical Thinking Skills, A Team Approach to Human Services, Person-Centered Thinking, MR Advanced Topics, Aging and the MR population. Each module is between 6 and 12 hours. There will be up to twenty people in each class.
When all 5 modules have been completed, the employee receives their Direct Support Professional 2 Certificate.
